Sodium trimetaphosphate descriptions
Sodium trimetaphosphate (SHMP) is more correctly termed sodium polymetaphosphate. Sodium trimetaphosphate of commerce is typically a mixture of polymeric metaphosphates (NaPO3)3, of which the hexamer is the main one. Sodium trimetaphosphate is prepared by melting monosodium orthophosphate, followed by rapid cooling. Sodium trimetaphosphate hydrolyzes in aqueous solution, particularly under acidic conditions, to sodium trimetaphosphate and sodium orthophosphate.
Sodium trimetaphosphate Applications
Sodium trimetaphosphate is used as sequestering agent with in a wide variety applications of industries. Sodium trimetaphosphate is used in the industry of soap, detergents, water treatment, metal finishing and plating, pulp and paper manufacture, synthesis of polymers, photographic products, textiles, scale removal and agriculture.
Sodium trimetaphosphate is used as a food additive to raise the pH value of other phosphates. Sodium trimetaphosphate is also used as a dispersing agent to break down clay and other soil types.
Sodium trimetaphosphate is used as a deflocculant in the making of fine particled slip ceramic. Sodium trimetaphosphate is also a whitening ingredient included in some whitening toothpastes.
